After this bill of sale is executed, the following steps apply to complete the transfer:
- Seller signs the back of the title. The seller must sign and date the assignment section on the back of the Idaho (or out-of-state) certificate of title and complete the odometer disclosure on the title document.
- Buyer presents documents to the county DMV office. Bring the signed title, this bill of sale, a valid government-issued photo ID, and proof of Idaho liability insurance.
- Pay Idaho sales/use tax and fees. Idaho imposes 6% state sales tax on the purchase price (minus any trade-in allowance when purchased from a licensed dealer), plus the Idaho title fee (currently $14.00) and registration fees based on vehicle class.
- Meet the transfer deadline. Idaho requires the buyer to complete title transfer within 30 days of the sale (Idaho Code § 49-503). Missing the 30-day window results in a $20 late-titling fee in addition to the fees below.
- Receive new Idaho title and registration. The county DMV office processes the transfer and issues a new Idaho certificate of title in the buyer's name, along with registration and license plates.
- Lien notation (if financed). If the buyer is financing the purchase, the lender's name and address must be listed on the title application as the first lienholder. The lender holds the title until the loan is satisfied.
> Fees and procedures are current as of June 2026. Verify current figures at itd.idaho.gov.
