Section 8 - Alabama Title Transfer Notice
After execution of this disclosure, the following steps apply to complete title transfer in Alabama:
- Obtain signed title from seller. The seller must sign the back of the Alabama certificate of title in the seller's section and complete the odometer disclosure on the title if required by federal law.
- Submit to County Tax Collector. In Alabama, vehicle title transfers are processed at the county tax collector's office (or license plate office) in the county where the buyer resides. Bring the signed title, this disclosure, a valid government-issued photo ID, and proof of Alabama insurance.
- Pay Alabama Sales Tax. Alabama imposes a state sales tax of 2% on the purchase price of motor vehicles (Ala. Code § 40-23-100 et seq.), collected at the time of registration. County and municipal taxes may also apply - verify current rates with your county tax collector.
- Pay title and registration fees. Alabama title fee is currently $18.00 (subject to change). Registration fees vary by vehicle weight. Verify current fees with the Alabama Department of Revenue or your county tax collector.
- Obtain new Alabama title and registration. The county tax collector issues a new Alabama certificate of title and registration in the buyer's name.
